Business navigation: How to stay calm in turbulent market waters

The unexpected challenge: A Hawaiian adventure

Over Christmas break, my family and I went to the Big Island, our favorite place in Hawaii. We visited our favorite beach—where dolphins often swim by and teeming with fish for us to see. I had such great memories of my little ones safely playing in the tidepools. But during this trip, a massive swell hit the island and made the waters super choppy. Naturally, our family, firmly believing in the power of adventure (and maybe a touch too stubborn), decided to snorkel anyway.

Just like in business, sometimes we face unexpected conditions that challenge our comfort zone. The decision to proceed despite challenges can either lead to valuable experiences or important lessons—often both.

When plans take an unexpected turn

Everything started off smoothly; the fish were everywhere, almost as if they had signed up for a reality show. But then, my husband (who has a reputation for getting lost and wandering off…especially in the ocean) decides to call it quits and return to shore. I decided to go with him in a spirit of protectiveness. We slowly snorkeled our way back to shore. I popped my head up to check on him, and he was nowhere to be found. Panic surged through me like a rogue wave.

This moment mirrors many business situations where things appear to be going wrong. The initial success can quickly shift to uncertainty, especially when we lose sight of our familiar reference points.

The panic response: A lesson in business navigation

Even with all the safety gear—fins, flotation devices, and a snorkel—I let fear take the wheel. Instead of using my gear, I flailed around like a fish out of water. The waves seized the opportunity, shoving me toward a rocky area we tried to avoid. Those waves knocked me against the rocks, leaving me with scratches and bruises that are still on me as I’m writing you this email.

In business, we often have all the necessary tools and resources at our disposal, yet in moments of panic, we might forget to use them effectively. This natural but counterproductive response can lead to unnecessary setbacks.

The power of maintaining perspective

In that panicked moment, I forgot everything I knew about staying safe in the water. It served as a valuable lesson about keeping my cool. Oh, my husband was calmly snorkeling about 20 feet away from me the entire time…he was totally fine.

Just as my perceived crisis turned out to be a manageable situation, many business challenges appear more threatening than they actually are when viewed through the lens of panic.
